WEEK THREE

-June 18-19 I attended a committee meeting for the Literacy Fair on Monday 18th from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., finished designing the invitation card for the literacy event, and made a flyer for book donations. Also looking up private schools, libraries, craigslist listings for free books, and book sales to collect books. I got in contact with the Poughkeepsie book sale. Tuesday morning, attended the training meeting.
-June 20 I designed the Literacy Fair poster and flyer. Received positive response from Poughkeepsie Public Library and a community member on book donations. The day also consisted of designing a flyer to recruit volunteers to help with the program.
-June 21-22 I searched for activities and programs offered by museums to add them to the Literacy Fair. Called Schenectady Museum & Suits-Bueche Planetarium, The World Awareness Children’s Museum, and Popp Butterfly Conservatory to ask about their outreach programs for the Literacy Fair. Music Mobile returned the call and I was able to get a rate ($500) from them to do an activity at the Literacy Fair (make instruments from recycled material and group musical program).

WEEK TWO

-June 11 was the major fundraiser event. Worked from 8am to 9:30 p.m. Helped with setting auction items, tables, taking pictures at the tennis court, and putting contest.
-June 12-15 I organized more books, found websites online where kids can read online for free,  and made a flyer to hand out to kids/families with information about the websites. Also found the <www.wegivebook.org> website where 15-LOVE could be a campaign and be eligible to get free books mailed to us, and found information on Barnes & Noble sponsorships and donations and being able to do a book fair with them. These days also consisted of designing an envelope, response card, and invitation card for the Capital Region Children’s Literacy Fair event. Also spoke to another intern who told me about a huge book sale at the Poughkeepsie Public Library.

Websites where kids can read online for free:

We Give Books:

Become a campaign on their website and receive a book every time someone reads a book under our organization.

Barnes & Noble sponsorships and donations and being able to do a book fair with them:

-They support requests from non-profit organizations that focus on literacy, arts, or education for k-12 children.
-For donations and sponsorships, we have to submit our proposal to the community relations manager or store manager at a local Barnes & Noble store.

-They also have fundraising opportunities by doing in-store book fairs
-to do the book fair we have to speak to a store manager or community relations manager
-the book fair will be in-store and also on their online store
-dates have to be reserved at least 8 weeks in advance
-our organization would get a percentage of the net book fair sales
-best time to do a book fair--> "Support our summer reading program" or "Welcome students back to school"

Summer Service Scholar

LIMA JAMES • Project Coordinator • Summer Service Scholar (Siena College, AmeriCorps VISTA) • June 4th 2012 - August 10th 2012

The Project Coordinator for Summer Reading: helps streamline the distribution process and organization methods for the books, as well as finding volunteers to routinely come into the office to organize the donated books. In addition, looking for sources of additional used books and book donations will also be important for the sustainability of the program. Project Coordinator will be essential in event planning (Literacy Event), forming community partnerships with other youth-serving organizations, recruiting volunteers. The Project Coordinator should have strong organizational skills, strong verbal and written communication skills, an ability to work as part of a team, and a passion for youth literacy.
